Il Sagrantino di Montefalco
Sagrantino di Montefalco, a wine with a distinctive flavor, straight from the heart of Italy—first on the palate and then in the hearts of those who taste it.
Technically, according to the regulations, Sagrantino di Montefalco is a Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG), a wine of great structure
made exclusively from Sagrantino grapes.
Thanks to its exceptionally high content of polyphenols and tannins, this wine has extraordinary aging potential.
It therefore requires a long period of aging, first in oak and then in bottle.
It pairs beautifully with grilled meats, dark sauces, and game, and should be served at a temperature of 18° C.
Sagrantino is the signature wine of Montefalco, a town in Umbria in the province of Perugia, and of the neighboring municipalities; as such, it may be produced exclusively
in the municipalities of Montefalco, Bevagna, Gualdo Cattaneo, Castel Ritaldi, and Giano dell’Umbria.
It is available in both dry and passito styles.
The passito is also a DOCG wine, which pairs well with aged cheeses or dry desserts featuring dark chocolate and dried fruit, and should be served at a temperature of 12° C.
Sagrantino, whether dry or passito, is produced from 100% Sagrantino grapes, the origin of which is somewhat debated.
Given its lack of similarity to other grape varieties, Sagrantino is believed to be an autochthonous variety, meaning it is of local origin.
The history of the variety tells us that, after nearly disappearing in the 1960s, the dedication of a few winemakers led to its recognition as a DOC in 1979 and as a DOCG in 1992.
